Symptoms of Dry Eye

Common symptoms associated with dry eye include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Burning or stinging sensation
  • Redness or irritation
  • A gritty feeling in the eyes
  • Light sensitivity
  • Watery eyes

These symptoms can be more than just an inconvenience, often leading to severe discomfort, frequent eye infections, or impaired vision.

What Causes Dry Eye?

Dry eye occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears or lack essential components, such as natural oils from glands in the eyelids. Insufficient tear production can result from various factors, including age, medical conditions, environment, or prolonged screen use.

At Vision Performance Optometric Center, we believe in treating you as an individual because we understand that your eyes—and dry eye symptoms—are unique. That’s why we offer personalized solutions to help alleviate dry eye discomfort.

Our Approach to Managing Dry Eye

At Vision Performance Optometric Center, dry eye screenings are part of every eye exam. If symptoms or concerns are identified during our initial assessment, we conduct a comprehensive dry eye analysis.

We understand that each patient is different, and that’s why our care is personalized. We use various technologies and procedures in our treatment protocols, all designed to help you find relief from dry eye symptoms.

What sets our approach apart is our commitment to finding practical solutions. We’re not just about treating symptoms—we focus on improving your quality of life.

Meibography

Meibography is a diagnostic imaging technology that helps us assess your meibomian glands’ health. By capturing detailed images of the oil glands in your eyelids, we can look for any abnormalities, including gland atrophy (shortened or shrunken glands), which can indicate meibomian gland dysfunction—a common cause of dry eye.

Meibomian gland expression involves applying pressure to the eyelid to unblock the meibomian glands. This gentle, meticulous movement allows the glands to produce the oil layer of tears, helping to improve tear quality and reduce dry eye symptoms.

Medicated eye drops are prescribed to patients to help increase tear production or enhance their tear film’s stability. These drops can provide significant relief from dry eye symptoms.

Punctal plugs help to increase tear retention by blocking the tear ducts. These tiny medical devices help keep the eyes lubricated for longer to help reduce dry eye symptoms. The minimally invasive treatment is performed at our practice with no downtime needed.

Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy is a noninvasive, technology-driven treatment option. The device uses light pulses to stimulate the meibomian glands to produce more oil and help melt any oils trapped in the glands. These natural oils are essential to achieve lasting moisture and supporting tear film quality, which can reduce dry eye symptoms.

We also offer IPL treatments to help rejuvenate skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines, sun spots, and redness.

Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT)

Developed by NASA, LLLT has proven effective at treating dry eye disease. LLLT uses specially designed LED lights, lasers, or a combination of both to gently warm up the eyelids, helping unclog meibomian glands and release oils.

With LLLT you can expect:

  • A safe, noninvasive procedure
  • 15-minute sessions
  • Minimal recovery time
  • Limited side effects and discomfort

It’s designed to be quick and painless! Lay back with the Equinox mask on and relax as the warm light clears your glands.

LLLT can also help decrease the appearance of facial wrinkles, acne, and rosacea.

TempSure Envi Radiofrequency

The TempSure Envi is a noninvasive therapeutic treatment developed for various purposes, including reducing wrinkles, crow’s feet, and other signs of aging. It can also help relieve some of the symptoms of dry eye.

TempSure Envi uses radiofrequency (RF) technology to gently warm your eyelids. This treatment targets the meibomian glands, which are tiny glands along the eyelid margins that produce oils for your tears. Clogged oils in these glands can disrupt your tear film, leading to dry eyes. The warmth from TempSure Envi helps melt and loosen those blockages.

Sometimes, a gentle massage after the treatment helps further express trapped oil, allowing it to flow freely again. This can improve the quality and quantity of your tears, bringing relief from dry eye symptoms.

The procedure is safe, and you can return to your normal daily activities immediately following treatment.
